Up to 4,000 women took part in the Cancer Research’s Race for Life run around the grounds of Stormont, Belfast, at the weekend. This was the 10th anniversary of the event and over £350,000 was raised for the charity.

The event was one of 180 races taking place across the UK as part of the biggest-ever all-female fundraiser. The run included thousands of women with inspirational stories of survival or memories of a loved one who died from cancer. Many of them had messages on T-shirts describing why they were running.

Ahead of the race, which was celebrating its 10th anniversary in Northern Ireland, there was a minute’s silence to give participants an opportunity to reflect. This was followed by a ‘minute of celebration’, when everyone was encouraged to cheer and clap.

Among the celebrities supporting the Ulster event were Linda Keating, sister of pop star Ronan Keating, Miss Northern Ireland Catherine Milligan and UTV’s Julian Simmons. The money raised during Sunday’s event will not only help the charity’s work throughout the UK but will fund local researchers at Queen’s University who are currently conducting a wide variety of laboratory studies and clinical trials aimed at improving the treatment and care of cancer patients.
