ROYAL MAIL DELIVERS FUNDRAISING BOOST TO DARLINGTON HOSPICE
06/02/07
St Teresa’s Hospice in Darlington is to benefit from a national fundraising partnership made between Help the Hospices and the Royal Mail.
Help the Hospices, which supports more than 220 hospices located across the UK, was selected as the Royal Mail’s official charity partner in 2006, following a nationwide vote by employees.
As part of their charity adoption, the Royal Mail stipulated that local offices and depots should concentrate their fundraising efforts on the local area, to ensure they play a key role in the communities in which they work.
Royal Mail staff in the Darlington area have now begun raising money on behalf of their local hospice, St Teresa’s, with volunteers organising a series of events and activities, including a successful tombola which was recently held in conjunction with local Post Office branches.
All of the money they are able to raise in the coming months will be matched pound-for-pound by Royal Mail, with proceeds being used to maintain the Hospice’s existing range of palliative and respite care services.
St Teresa’s Hospice Director, Jane Bradshaw, said: St Teresa’s Hospice relies heavily on voluntary contributions, fundraising events and legacies to help maintain our current services and ensure that we are able to provide these services free of charge to people in South Durham and North Yorkshire. Every penny we receive can really make a difference and I am delighted that a company as significant as Royal Mail have recognised our work and are now offering their support.”
Mark Wilkes, Community co-ordinator for the Royal Mail in Darlington, said: Raising money for Help the Hospices is a great way for Royal Mail staff to get involved at a local level. By concentrating our efforts on the local area we are able to choose where the proceeds go and we can see first hand how it is making a difference.”
