10K Challenge for The Message!

Howard Lake | 8 February 2007 | Newswire

Manchester-based youth charity The Message Trust is up for another challenge the Great Manchester Run, UK’s biggest and most prestigious 10k, which returns to the streets of Manchester for the fifth time this May!

Covered by BBC and endorsed by Manchester’s energetic and committed City Council, the Great Manchester Run has become an event of real international significance and prestige, heavily oversubscribed in recent years. Last year, The Message Trust took part in the Run with a fantastic team of over 40 runners who raised more than £50,000 for young people living in disadvantaged areas across the city.

On 20th May 2007, Andy Hawthorne, founder and CEO of the award-winning organisation, will lead once again a dynamic team of staff, volunteers and supporters, in a run that aims to raise much-needed funding for the praiseworthy youth charity. Participation in this year’s event has been beyond expectations and, although the Run does not take place until May, The Message has only a few places available!

Director of PR & Fundraising Andy Betts, who has already signed up for this year’s Run, said:

“Manchester is well known for its passion for sport and, judging by the entries we have had so far, it looks like we will have an even bigger team this year! The 2006 Run was a tremendous success for The Message Trust: all of the team completed the race, some great times were clocked up and we managed to achieve our £50,000 team target”.

He continued:

“Whether you are an athlete wanting to beat a personal record or a runner taking on the challenge just for fun, we’d love to have you on our team! Signing up for this popular event will not only give you a sense of achievement but will really make you glow with pride, especially as you’ll be helping us fund a number of exciting new opportunities to reach even more young people”.

The Great Manchester Run starts at 10am on Sunday 20th May 2007: the ten-kilometre course will make its way through the streets of central Manchester taking in some of the city’s most striking landmarks along the way.

NOTES FOR EDITORS:

Operating in Greater Manchester for over 15 years, The Message Trust is driven by Christian principles and a passion for young people and the city’s most deprived estates. Its incredible work has been endorsed not only from everyday people, volunteers and local communities but also from the police, councillors, politicians and the business world.

The Message has been working towards its vision of transforming communities and reducing crime through a number of fresh initiatives, including: Eden (volunteer-based activities across Manchester’s most disadvantaged estates); Eden Buses (two unique mobile youth centres touring four nights a week across the city); LifeCentre (a funky youth café environment); Genetik (a £1,000,000 music, dance and recording complex); and Reflex (accredited programmes delivered to young offenders in custody).

The enormous impact of The Message has been confirmed by a number of independent studies (for example, police reports that in some cases criminality has declined by up to 47%) and has been rewarded with a nomination for the prestigious national Charity Awards 2006.
