Redeem responds to Recipero's report

Redeem has been working with the UK’s largest charities for several years raising funds through the recycling of mobile phones and printer cartridges. We have generated over £2.2 million for good causes and recycled and reused hundreds of thousands of handsets and have not received a single complaint about incidences of stolen goods.
We are an ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:2004 accredited company and take quality very seriously having robust processes in place to deal with the phones we receive. Redeem would never put our partners’ or indeed our own well-established reputation at risk by knowingly accepting stolen goods and we strongly refute any suggestion of this.
While we commend the service that Recipero’s CheckMend offers and support its use for online functions and situations where individuals stand to gain from the sale of stolen mobiles, at present it is not a practical solution for the processing of high volumes of handsets. The time, labour and monetary costs involved would undoubtedly impact upon the funds generated for charities through recycling.
Redeem provides the public with a free service to allow them to dispose of their old mobile phones while raising funds for charity, protecting the environment and providing communication for developing countries. We believe the positive impacts of programmes such as ours should be supported and, while we appreciate the mobile phone theft is an issue in today’s society, it should not be used to create a barrier to recycling initiatives denying those who benefit from them so greatly.
