Third World charity feels reverse tsunami effect

Irish third world charity Trocaire has seen its public donations income for 2005 drop by 44% following the huge increase the previous year due to the tsunami. In 2004 total income was ‚€83 million while in 2005 the figure was ‚€49 million.

In 2004 Trocaire raised an ‘additional’ ‚€34.6 million for major emergencies, particularly the tsunami. By contrast, in 2005 emergency appeals for the earthquate in Pakistan raised ‚€1.7 million and ‚€2.8 million for the ongoing drought in Africa.

Trocaire’s Lenten appeal raised over ‚€10 million in 2005 and its Global Gift Appeal ‚€3.5 million. Fundraising and publicity costs last year were ‚€3.7 million.
