Over one hundred and fifty Mancunians took to the streets of Manchester last Sunday (29 October) as part of Shelter’s first ever ‘Walk for Home’ event around the city. The walkers, who were led by XFM DJs Paul Tonkinson and Adam Cole, are expected to raise a fantastic £10,000 in sponsorship.
The money raised will go straight into Shelter’s work in Manchester. 1,100 homeless Manchester children (2) are stuck in temporary accommodation, ruining their health, education and future prospects.
The inaugural walk started at Old Trafford and finished at the City of Manchester Stadium – passing key Manchester landmarks including Urbis, the Manchester City Cathedral and G-MEX. Participants of all ages and abilities had the choice of walking a challenging 12km course or a fun 5km option.
Shivonne Graham, Head of Corporate, Community and Events at Shelter, said: We were thrilled with the success of Sunday’s ‘Walk for Home’ event. It was a real family affair and the people of Manchester should be proud of themselves for raising such a great, and vital, amount of money.
The positive feedback was unanimous and we are looking forward to next year’s walk already. Everyone involved had great fun on the day and raised vital funds for Shelter’s work with homeless and badly housed people in the area at the same time.”

Shelter believes everyone should have a home. We help more than 170,000 people a year fight for their rights, get back on their feet, and find and keep a home. We also tackle the root causes of Britain’s housing crisis by campaigning for new laws, policies and solutions. Shelter launched the Million Children Campaign in April 2004 aimed at getting the Government to commit to ending bad housing for the next generation of children. Bad housing robs children of their health, education and a fair chance in life
