Children from St. Michael's CofE learn the recovery position
Crucial Education
The Children’s Safety Education Foundation (CSEF) is celebrating the end of a successful Crucial Crew in Trafford. Throughout September, the event welcomed over 1,700 children from local primary schools to take part in a unique interactive learning experience.
Held at Trafford’s Territorial Army Barracks, the ‘hands-on’ learning event was supported by 7 local agencies including the Greater Manchester Police, Fire & Rescue and Ambulance Services.
Crucial Crew gave local primary school children aged 10 to 11 the opportunity to gain valuable personal safety skills from the professionals through demonstrations and discussions in real life situations. The children had the chance to crawl through dark rooms to escape fire, answer questions in an interactive quiz and even put their friends into the recovery position. The scenarios used were specially designed to enable the children to transfer the skills they learned to their home environment too.
The Mayor of Trafford attended Crucial Crew and she was impressed by the children’s enthusiasm and the interactivity of the scenarios. She said: Children get a more valuable education when they are having fun, and that was clearly evident at Crucial Crew”.
Crucial Crew is one of the many initiatives run by CSEF, a North West-based charity now entering its third year. Chief Executive John McNamee explains more about CSEF: As one of the world’s most developed countries, it is inconceivable that children might come to harm just because they have not had enough information on how to stay safe. CSEF is passionate about providing the tools children and young people need to grow into confident adults.”
As well as Greater Manchester’s emergency services, Trafford Strategic Transport and Road Safety Unit, Trafford Community Leisure Trust, Trafford Healthcare NHS Trust, Amey Mouchel and Atkins ran interactive scenarios.
Crucial Crew will be returning to Trafford in February for more interactive learning.
