Barnardos in Ireland has started a scheme where it will sell new clothes donated from commercial retailers in its charity shops. ‘Barnardos Brand New’ will appeal to retailers and wholesalers to provide unsold or end of line goods.

The scheme has been implemented on a trial basis in Barnardos Liffey Valley shop outside Dublin and bridal boutique in Dun Laoghaire. Barnardos now plans to roll out ‘brand new’ across all it shops.

Barnardos shop sales were ‚€960,000 in 2005, down from ‚€1,077,000 in 2004. Net income increased, however, from ‚€151,000 in 2004 to ‚€229,000 in 2005. Shop sales represented 12% of total voluntary income in 2005.
