New shopping portal gives to charity and shoppers

Howard Lake | 21 August 2006 | News

A new shopping portal promises to give cash back to shoppers as well as raise money for charity.

UShopUCare gives cashback of up to 25 per cent to shoppers from the commission it receives from retailers. At the same time it donates a percentage of this to charities chosen by shoppers.

The site works on a membership basis and Nicola Cassidy, one of the two founding partners, said there are 500 plus retailers signed up so far, including high street names like Laura Ashley, Boots, Blockbuster, Mothercare, Boden and Cotton Traders.

The idea of shopping online and donating to charity is not new, but Cassidy said the USP for the site is the fact that it offers something to shoppers as well as charities. The ‘stickiness’ we offer for people to come back to the site is that they get cashback for themselves, she said. Otherwise there is no incentive for that person to shop with us.

Shoppers or ‘members’ can nominate a charity or good cause of their choice (they do not have to be registered charities), or charities are free to nominate themselves to be included in the site’s directory. Those already listed include Age Concern, Barnardo’s Refuge, RSPB and Shakespeare’s Globe.
