Howard Lake | 20 August 2006 | News

As Irish disability charity Enable Ireland launched its Gold Badge Appeal it is reporting a drop in fundraising income in 2005 and is placing some of the blame on ‘systematic theft’ of its door to door clothes collections. Net fundraising income in 2005 was ‚€2.5 million, down from just under ‚€3 million in 2004.

Enable Ireland runs one of the largest charity retail operations in Ireland which accounted for 43% of fundraising income in 2005, down from under 50% in 2004. Enable Ireland has attempted to address the theft of clothes by asking people to deliver clothes direct to shops.

The Gold Badge appeal asks people to donate ‚€2 for badges from the 18th to 24th September. In 2005 Enable Ireland had an income of ‚€43.5 milliion. Total fundraising income was ‚€8.9 million, with costs at ‚€6.4 million.
