Last year an intrepid Darlington Building Society team of 7 tackled the gruelling 24 Peaks Challenge in the Lake District in support of the National Deaf Children’s Society, raising over £5,400 in the process.
At midnight on Saturday 19 August, 4 members of that team [Peter Rowley (chief executive), Robert Murphy (commercial manager), Mark Woodcock (district manager) and Jude Cambell (customer sales advisor) will set out on the Lyke Wake Walk, a complete crossing of the North Yorks Moors, a distance of over 40 miles. It is anticipated that the crossing will be completed in 16-18 hours.
The Society is raising funds for The Unicorn Centre, based in Hemlington. The Centre is a registered charity that provides riding opportunities for young people with physical disabilities, learning difficulties or mental health problems in an inclusive, safe and supportive environment, allowing individuals to achieve their full potential.
Peter Rowley commented, 2006 is a momentous year in the history of Darlington Building Society as we celebrate our 150th anniversary. In addition to a large number of charitable events we have already supported across our branch network this year, we wanted to get involved in a flagship fundraising event which would not only challenge the participants but would also raise valuable funds for a very worthy local cause”.
He added, The Unicorn Centre is an amazing place and is held in high regard for the excellent work it does for disadvantaged young people. The Darlington Building Society Lyke Wake Walk Team is looking forward to helping them further through its physical exertions”.
If anyone would like to make a donation in support of the walk they should call into any branch of Darlington Building Society and credit account number 60160566 – Unicorn Centre.
