Business leaders fail to pay up to Sharon Stone's appeal

Howard Lake | 20 June 2006 | News

Actress Sharon Stone has criticised business leaders who publicly pledged large sums to help fight malaria but have yet to pay up after 18 months.

Ms Stone persuaded the business leaders at the World Economic Forum 18 months ago to make personal donations to fund mosquito nets in malarial regions. She pledged $10,000 herself and received promises totalling $1 million on the day following her impromptu and impassioned call for action.

So far only $250,000 has been paid. According to the San Francisco Chronicle “she’s furious after hearing the United Nations Children’s Fund has been forced to make up the shortfall with its own funds.”
