New free email service to donate 45% of profits to charities

Howard Lake | 4 April 2006 | News

Ippimail.com is a new free email service which aims to raise funds for participating charities by donating 45% of the profits it makes from banner advert sales on its website.

Ippimail.com is already being promoted to supporters by Save the Children, Breast Cancer Care, Terrence Higgins Trust, Born Free Foundation, Turning Point, The Suzy Lamplugh Trust, and Muscular Dystrophy Campaign. These charities form the founding group but any registered charity can sign up to Ippimail.

All they have to do is commit to publicising the service to their existing supporters through their regular channels such as a link on their fundraising pages of a main website or an article in a publication or other communication.

The Ippimail service is built on Open Source programming so it will also donate a further 10% of the Open Source programming community.

There is no charge to charities or individuals to sign up or use Ippimail. Income is generated from the sale of conventional banner advertising.

Its founders say that “just by using an Ippimail address users will be contributing to their favorite good causes on a daily basis. It is ‘armchair giving’ in the true sense of the expression.”

‘Ippi’ means a helping hand or ‘to do one’s bit’ in Japanese.

It is being promoted to companies as well as a cost-free way for them to enhance their social contribution by encouraging their staff to use Ippimail for their personal email.

Ippimail aims to increase its income from banner ads by giving users the chance to complete an anonymous questionnaire about their interests which will result in them viewing more targeted or relevant advertising on the Ippimail site. Advertisers will pay Ippimail more to display adverts on this basis.

As well as an email forwarding service, Ippimail.com offers the usual free email functions including junk mail filters and protection against computer viruses, trojans etc. The company says “there is no junk mail generated by Ippimail and every effort will be made to eliminate external junk mail.”
