Atlantic Philanthropies, one of Europe’s largest charitable foundations, has made a ‚€10 million donation to a Cork based charity. St Patrick’s Hospital cares for terminally ill patients throughout Cork city and county.

St Patrick’s chief executive Kevin O’Dwyer said the donation followed contacts between Atlantic Philanthropies and the Department of Health three years ago when the American charity was seeking to assist projects for older people. The new centre, which will cost ‚€30 million in total, will provide a 75-bed hospital.

AP’s programme manager Jean Manahan said one of the foundation’s aims was to enhance general health services for older people. AP was set up by Irish-American billionaire Chuck Feeney.

Recently AP has been in the news for cutting their grant to the Dublin based watchdog body the Centre for Public Inquiry after allegations against the centre’s director. The former director has denied the allegations.
