Howard Lake | 14 July 2005 | News

The Law Society Charity donated more than £400,000 to over 20 charities during 2004.

The beneficiaries since April 2004 include the Howard League for Penal Reform – an inquiry into the treatment of children in penal institutions; the NSPCC young witness support programme; Book Aid International, for the provision of law books in sub-Saharan Africa and the Rift Valley Newcastle Justice Project, which is a Joint project between Newcastle Law Society and Rift Valley in Kenya to further develop the provision of legal services in Kenya.

Kevin Martin, Law Society President, said: “Solicitors have a proud tradition of carrying out voluntary work and giving free legal advice and other assistance to those unable to afford it. These donations will benefit causes across the world whose work endorses in different ways the Law Society’s objective of promoting access to justice for all.”
