Kwik-Fit breaks tyre rolling world record to raise £30,000 for DEC

Staff from automative parts firm Kwik-Fit and their families today broke the Guinness World Record for simultaneous tyre rolling at Chester Race Course and raised over £30,000 for the Disasters Emergency Committee’s (DEC) Tsunami appeal.

The successful attempt involved 238 people each rolling a tyre over 100 metres, breaking the previous world record by one.

The event was the brainchild of Kwik-Fit employee Stuart Livingstone who thought the firm should put one of its main products to use in a mass participation event to raise funds for the tsunami appeal. To his delight the idea received widespread support both within Kwik-Fit and the big tyre manufacturers.

Companies representing all aspects of the motor industry including car and tyre manufacturers, fleet management companies and rental operators agreed to donate money by sponsoring tyres at £500 each.

The previous record for simultaneous tyre rolling was set on 2 June 2004 by pupils and staff at Fermanagh Elementary School in Pennsylvania, United States, and involved 237 people rolling one tyre each over 100 metres.
