International Development Secretary Hilary Benn has praised staff at The Phone Room for their fundraising efforts for victims of the Asian tsunami disaster.

Mr Benn visited the Oxford-based agency yesterday, where 30 staff have been handling telephone donations to a number of UK charities. Since the tsunami disaster of 26 December 2004, The Phone Room’s callers have seen over £165,000 pledged for victims of the tsunami.

The overall response rate has been 21% with around 100 new direct donors per 1,000 people contacted. Many of these gifts have been secured via Paperless Direct Debit and Credit Card.
