The world’s largest humanitarian group, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, has raised the most in a single appeal in its history, with 85% of the total coming from the public.

As a result of its success, the 181 national societies of the Geneva-based federation are now scaling down their fundraising appeals.

Federation spokesman Roy Probert told Reuters: “It is a record. We have never raised this much money before for an appeal.”

Other non-profits are also stopping their tsunami appeals. The Disasters Emergency Committee in the UK has already announced that it will not advertise for new donations.
UNICEF is ending its appeal, after raising $300 million, more than double its initial target of $144 million. Like the Red Cross, UNICEF says that, in response to the tsunami disaster, it has raised more money in the shortest amount of time in its history.

Medecins Sans Frontiers was the first non-profit to end its tsunami appeal earlier this month.
