US fundraising for Asian tsunami victims reaches $245 million

The Chronicle of Philanthropy reports that Americans have donated $245 million in the past week to aid organisations providing relief in the wake of the Asian earthquake and tsunami.

Much of the money has come in online, says the newspaper, which details the experiences of some of the larger non-profits.

The American Red Cross has received more than $57 million of its $106 million total via its Web site.

The US Fund for UNICEF has 150,000 online donations totalling $20 million of its $30 million overall total.

Save the Children has received between $6 million and $7 million online, out of its $15 million total.

World Vision USA has received $11 million of its $20 million total online. World Vision Canada has received 25,000 donations online, compared to 50,000 telephone donations.

$11 million has been donated online to Oxfam America out of its $15 million total.

By 3 January, Catholic Relief Services had received $8 million online out of its $14.4-million total.

CARE USA has received $5.4 million online out of its $12.5 million total.

About half of the $10 million donated to Mercy Corps has come in online.

Doctors Without Borders has received $16 million online out of its $20 million total.
