Banks waive credit card charges for tsunami relief donations

Howard Lake | 6 January 2005 | News

The Association of Payment Clearing Services (Apacs) has said that its members will not charge the usual fee on donations by credit card to charities involved in the Asian tsunami relief effort.

The transaction fee charged to the charities by a bank acquirer is usually between one and 2.5%. The agreement to waive fees and backdate this to the beginning of the appeal should save charities an estimated £300,000.

The transaction fee has always been waived for the Disasters Emergency Appeal, but this is the first time that Apacs has offered the same deal to individual charities.
