Bloggers have played an important part in promoting the different ways of giving to the Asian floods emergency appeals and in linking people to information on the disaster such as lists of missing people.

Bloggers, or online citizen journalists, have reacted quickly and effectively to share practical information about the relief effort and ways to donate to the south Asian disaster funds.

One of the most comprehensive and respected is The South-East Asia Earthquake and Tsunami, or SEA-EAT for short, which has published dozens of appeals for funding from organisations large and small. It was set up after the disaster of 26 December to provide and share “news and information about resources, aid, donations and volunteer efforts”.

It is a remarkable example of individual and collaborative initiative online. Its volunteer contributors are also producing a Wiki or database on all aspects of the disaster, to form part of Wikipedia, the open source/free encyclopedia.

Appropriately enough bloggers have just been named TIME magazine’s People Of The Year.
