UK government increases Asian disaster donation to £50 million

The UK government has increased its funding for relief work for the Asian earthquake/tsunami disaster from £15 million to £50 million.

The Department for International Development today announced a further £35 million to help the victims of the Asian earthquake that struck on Boxing Day. This brings the UK’s total contribution to £50 million, making the UK the largest bilateral donor to the relief effort.

The World Bank today made the largest gift to date, totalling $250 million (£130 million). The UN estimates that governments and individuals have pledged nearly half a billion dollars to the relief effort in the four days since the earthquake and tsunami occurred. This figure does not include in-kind gifts and donated logistical support.
