Ann Cotton, Founder and Executive Director of CAMFED International, has won the award for Social Entrepreneur Of The Year at the Central region finals of the nationwide competition.

Beating 36 other short-listed entrepreneurs from all kinds of businesses, Ann won the award for her passionate support of education and her ability to marshal funds and people to support CAMFED‘s aims.

She founded CAMFED after visiting Zimbabwe in 1990, where she was moved by the passion for education amongst girls in poor, rural communities. From supporting 32 girls in 1993, CAMFED has expanded to reach over 237,000 children, young people and their guardians.

On winning the award Ann said: “It’s great to receive this Award and I feel deeply honoured – credit goes to all the sponsors for putting social entrepreneurship high on their agenda.”

Ann, the only woman among the 37 short-listed finalists in the Central region, will now go on to compete in the National Entrepreneur Of The Year finals in October. The overall Entrepreneur Of The Year 2004 will then go forward to compete for the accolade of World Entrepreneur Of The Year in Monte Carlo in 2005.

The Entrepreneur Of The Year awards programme, now in its sixth year in the UK, takes place in over 35 countries around the world with nearly 10,000 entrepreneurs competing at regional, national and international levels every year.
