Supermarket Sainsbury’s is looking for more animal charities to benefit from its programme of donating food to zoo animals.

Sainsbury’s offer of free food is not being taken up by enough animal charities, according to an article in Sainsbury’s Magazine.

“We have to take perfectly wholesome food off the shelves every day because it’s past its sell-by date”, explains Martin Bowden, Sainsbury’s community resources manager. This is then given to charities, zoos and animal sanctuaries. The latest organisation to benefit is Bristol Zoo, which is now saving around £400 a week on its animal feed bill.

Sainsbury’s is looking to expand its programme. “We’d love more charities to benefit from the programme”, added Mr Bowden. “We even offer training to help them meet the food-handling standards.”

Sainsbury’s says that it is only the second UK company and the first food retailer to appoint a community resources manager to a donation programme like this.
