Oxfam to launch chain of fairtrade coffee shops

Howard Lake | 12 May 2004 | News

Oxfam is to take on the likes of Starbucks with a chain of coffee shops selling fairtrade coffee and snacks.

The cafes will trade under the name “Progreso”. Oxfam hopes to launch three outlets by the end of 2004 and have a chain of 20 within the next three years. Potential ites in Scotland and the southeast are already being investigated and Oxfam is looking for concession partners who can provide suitable locations within existing retail operations, such as large bookstores.

The coffee shop market is tough but Oxfam believes that it can offer an attractive alternative: it believes that Progreso will be “the antithesis of the global corporate cafe, with better product and real heart.”
