Oxfam is selling new books and second hand books online via The Book Pl@ce and Abebooks.co.uk respectively.

Supporters can buy new books from The Book Pl@ce via Oxfam’s site and earn 10% for the charity. In addition they can buy second hand books online from Abebooks.co.uk, with Oxfam receiving all the proceeds from its own publication sales, and 5% commission on any other title.

Oxfam supporters can therefore buy online any of the 50 million books available from the two partners’ sites. In its latest monthly e-mail newsletter, Oxfam claims it is now offering “the world’s biggest second hand bookshop”.

Oxfam chose to partner with Abebooks because of its deals with other key sites such as Amazon. People browsing at Amazon are often in fact viewing books available at Abebooks. In addition, Oxfam explains that “the abebooks site is made up of thousands of small book dealers and this suits the Oxfam approach, enabling each Oxfam bookshop to sell online if it wishes.” Sixteen Oxfam shops sell their books online.

Abebooks has also provided Oxfam bookshops with support, training and advice on pricing and selling as well on using their site.

Oxfam sold 12 million books in 2002 through its bookshops, generating a profit of £13 million. It expects to raise £250,000 in 2004 by selling rare and collectable books online.
