Howard Lake | 15 January 2004 | News

Serial entrepreneur and founder of The Shirley Foundation Dame Stephanie Shirley discusses philanthropy with Nick Cater in SocietyGuardian.

Later this month Dame Stephanie Shirley will be collecting her Beacon Award, which recognises her as an individual who has made an exceptional contribution to charitable causes.

The founder and now life president of software company Xansa plc, Shirley is a multimillionaire. But she has put this to good use by setting up the Shirley Foundation in 1996, which has supported many pioneering projects, most of them focused on autism.
