Michael Howard MP to speak at CAF Conference
Michael Howard MP, the new leader of the Conservative Party, will be speaking at the CAF Conference and Exhibition on 13 November 2003.
The MP for Folkestone and Hythe has often
stated that public service reform is the key issue of Tory party policy. It is expected that the new leader will discuss how
the Conservatives can bolster the voluntary and community sector should they come to power.
Michael Howard’s attendance at the CAF Conference follows the earlier publication of a Conservative policy discussion paper, entitled “Sixty Million Citizens – unlocking Britain’s social capital”, which discusses the party’s vision of the future of the charity sector. As well as removing the
bureaucracy that hampers charities’ work and introducing tax reliefs on all spontaneous giving, the policy paper included controversial issues such as allowing Lotto players to decide which charities should benefit from their stake, and the potential transfer of resources from the public sector to the community sector.
