Public loses interest in leaving a charitable legacy

A survey for the Legacy Promotion Campaign (LPC) has found that more people than ever will not leave a charitable bequest in their will.

NOP carried out the research for the LPC and found that 40% of 50-65 year olds were not likely to include a charity in their will. Fifty four per cent felt leaving charitable legacies were of “little importance”.

The LPC reports a jump in the number of people who will not consider leaving a legacy at all from 39% to 48% since September 2002.

What has caused this decline? The plummeting stockmarket, the pensions crisis, and the cost of longterm care for older people are all contributory factors according to the research.

Theresa Dauncey, LPC’s director, said: “The research demonstrates the timeliness of this campaign and underscores the importance of charities working together to increase legacy income for the entire sector.”

LPC is launching a free will writing guide, produced the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, to promote legacies.
