Americans respect the non-profit sector far more than politicians and companies, according to new research from Independent Sector. Their report, Taking the Pulse of Americans’ Attitudes Toward Charities, reveals that Americans expressed high confidence in nearly all charitable organizations such as youth development groups (72%) and human service agencies (68%). In contrast only 29% had high confidence in major corporations, 27% in federal government, and 22% in Congress.
Nevertheless, many Americans still mistrust charities’ financial acumen: 32% of Americans believe that charities are wasteful in their use of donated funds. This is represents a slight improvement, as the figure stood at 39% in 1994.
