UK charity sector grows by 12%

The UK charity sector has grown by 12% in one year, according to the Top 3000 Charities 2001, published by CaritasData.

The assets of the top 3,000 charities in the UK have grown by 12%, from £58.7 billion in 1999 to £65.6 billion in 2000. These are the findings of the Dresdner RCM Global Investors Top 3000 Charities 2001, published by CaritasData. Some charities have enjoyed significant growth: the British Red Cross increased income from £24.7m to £37m and Save the Children Fund increased income from £30m to £35.1m.

Some of the figures, however, are misleading. The Victoria and Albert Museum for example appears to have enjoyed a massive jump from £4.4m in 1999 to £183m in 2000. However, this increase is down to an accounting change: it is simply the result of the transfer of the freehold of the V&A from government to the trustees.
