The Institute of Charity Fundraising Managers has called recent claims in the media about the scale of fraud in the voluntary sector both “unsubstantiated and irresponsible.” Claims that as much as £200m per year is being handed to bogus charity collectors were made following the recent conviction for theft of two of the trustees of Hands of Hope, the children’s cancer charity.
“The vast majority of collections are conducted responsibly, are monitored by those organisations on whose property they take place and provide a vital source of income for the charity sector,” said Andrew Watt, Head of Policy at ICFM. “The vast majority of registered charities are also conducted responsibly and fulfil the objectives for which they were created.”
