Different types of online communities
Durlacher suggests there are four types of online community. Which type is your charity trying to create and sustain?
Durlacher Research says that there are four main types of online community.
- Communities of purpose – where people try to achieve a similar objective e.g. auctioning items, buying CDs
- Communities of practice – where people share the same profession, such as UK Fundraising.
- Communities of circumstance – where people share similar life experiences e.g. parents, teenagers, or blind people. This type of community is often the kind that charities should be aiming to create to serve their clients.
- Communities of interest – where people share a common passion or interest e.g. football, or playing the violin. Again, this type could apply to many charities e.g. an environmental campaigning community.
