A $5bn payment from the Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife this week has made the Gates Foundation the world’s biggest grant-making foundation.

A $5bn payment from the Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife this week has made the Gates Foundation the world’s biggest grant-making foundation. With assets worth $21.8 billion it is bigger than the UK’s Wellcome Trust, which has assets worth $21.4 billion.

If the Gates’ had created a new foundation with the $5bn, it would still have been the sixth largest foundation in the US, according to Jimmy Guterman at The Standard
