I am Head of Fundraising for a small national charity and am looking at encouraging and advising our supporters on how to bequest money to us via wills and legacies. I am starting this from a novice’s point of view and have no idea what this entails and where to go for advice.

I am Head of Fundraising for a small national charity and am looking at encouraging and advising our supporters on how to bequest money to us via wills and legacies. I am starting this from a novice’s point of view and have no idea what this entails and where to go for advice.

I’d start with having a look at one or two of the how-to books on fundraising from legacies. UK Fundraising lists quite a few in the legacies/tax-effective giving section of its bookshop at:

    http://www.fundraising.co.uk/books/browse/16

    Try

Legacy Fundraising: The Art of Seeking Bequests
    http://www.fundraising.co.uk/books/243

    and

    Bequests and Legacies
    http://www.fundraising.co.uk/books/472

Then get in touch with some specialists in legacy fundraising and research such as Smee and Ford:

    http://www.waterlow.com/smeeandford

I used their services from 1989-97 at two different charities and found them very useful.

Also, sign up with the (free) Legacymarketing discussion forum at

    http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/Legacymarketing/

It offers “a forum for all legacy marketing professionals to discuss issues and share relevant information on all aspects of legacy fundraising” and, today, has 106 registered users.

Incidentally, Smee and Ford’s Richard Radcliffe is a regular contributor to that forum.

You could also review discussions on legacies in the legacies section of this forum:

    http://www.fundraising.co.uk/forum/forum.php?id=2

Those from 1996 to 2003 will be included in the archive:

    http://www.fundraising.co.uk/forum/forum.php?id=10

so try searching for “legacy” or “legacies”.

    Good luck!

We have recently introduced a legacy and Will-writing pack for our members – I would be happy to email you the details of the finished product and to give you a referral to the third-party that delivers the Will-writing service.
