What advantages does Crystal Reports have over Excel?
I keep hearing about it but have never seen it used

Crystal Reports – and similar business intelligence tools, as they’re called – are just better for developing standard reporting templates that can be used on an ongoing basis, and particularly when distrubuted around an organisation.
I guess Excel, and pivot tables in particular, can help provide some good tactical, one-off reporting, but for delivering consistent management information in a standardised way, a tool like Crystal, or Microsoft’s Reporting Services that comes with SQL server, are what you need.
And they’re not too expensive, either
As Keith says above, they are great for building ‘living’ reports that auto-populate data from your database, etc. for superb, on-demand managment reports.
Also, it deals with high-volumes of data that Excel can’t cope with so effectively.
