The Irish charity in our family is at present just a one-man band, so I’m trying to support him on fundraising. Small charities in the UK tend to sign up with CAF for things like processing credit card donations. Is there an equivalent way of doing things in Ireland? I just want to find a simple, cheap way of being able to take card donations. Any ideas appreciated.

You could use – they’ll take about 3% but, until you build up the turnover, that cost will be less than employing someone to process credit card payments offline. Of course, PayPal only works online, but it costs nothing to set up and it’s secure, so worth a try. Or might be another way of doing it – especially for events-based fundraising. Failing that, it’s not that difficult to register as a merchant through your bank, get a termninal, etc. After all, even the tiniest newsagent has a machine these days.
