The Waterstones Buy Books for Syria campaign has hit its target of raising £1 million for Oxfam’s Syria Crisis Appeal.

The campaign began in October, and saw Waterstones booksellers sell a selection of titles by bestselling authors, which had been donated by their publishers, with the full retail price donated to Oxfam.

Participating authors included Caitlin Moran, Mark Haddon (pictured), Victoria Hislop, Tracy Chevalier, Alexander McCall Smith, and Michael Morpurgo, with UK publisher support including Atlantic Books, Bloomsbury, Canongate, Egmont, Faber, and Granta.

Oxfam GB chief executive Mark Goldring said:

“The £1m raised will have a huge impact on Oxfam’s continuing work to help the Syrian people. It will help to provide clean water for hundreds of thousands inside the country, as well as support the many refugees in Jordan, Lebanon and Europe who have been forced to flee their homes.”
