In 1859, Swiss businessman Henri Dunant began a crusade to provide better medical
treatment for wounded soldiers, which led to the creation of the most important
human rights organisation in history, currently maintaining 137 societies worldwide.

Caroline Moorehead, a columnist on human rights for The Independent, is the first
writer to be granted wide access to the Red Cross’s closed archives in Geneva.
