# Sainsbury’s tackles food waste with £1 million funding offer

**Sainsbury’s is offering a £1m pot of funding for towns and communities that want
to tackle food waste.**

 

The funding announcement follows its recent commitment to continue its [Waste less, Save more](https://wastelesssavemore.sainsburys.co.uk/)
campaign, after its successful trial in Swadlincote, Derbyshire. Waste less, Save
more is a five-year plan to help customers throw less food in the bin and save money
on shopping bills.

More than 110 towns and cities across the UK have so far signed up to be Discovery
Communities. Discovery Communities receive a how-to guide with ideas ranging from
community events to technology that can help households reduce food waste, which
is also available as a download on the Waste less, Save more site.

 

The ideas will include inspiration for free or low-cost solutions based on what 
has worked well in Swadlincote, which has trialled a number of initiative and tools,
including free food-sharing app Olio and smart fridges which send ‘selfies’ to your
smartphone to help avoid doubling up on produce.

 

Communities are invited to pick ideas from the guide and apply for funding to implement
them, or to pitch their own ideas to a Dragons Den-style panel.

 

One deadline for applications has already taken place, and the final deadline is**
