**The British Red Cross is inviting nominations for its Humanitarian Awards 2016,
which celebrate the extraordinary things ordinary young people do. The awards, sponsored
by Canon, highlight how every day young people are making a huge difference to other
people’s lives across the UK.**

The awards recognise children and young adults who have helped people in their local
communities and beyond by giving first aid, befriending vulnerable people, fundraising
and campaigning for good causes.

This year the theme of the award is ‘making a difference matters’. Nominations are
invited for people aged 25 or under, and both individuals and groups of young people
are eligible.

The four award categories are:

 * fundraising
 * first aid
 * community action; and
 * volunteering

There is an award for each category, in addition to an overall winner.  The charity
encourages nominations to be accompanied by a photo of video to help bring the story
to life.

## Photography and video competition

The charity’s annual photography and video competition will run alongside the Humanitarian
Award, where young people can submit entries also based on the theme ‘making a difference
matters’. Entries will be judged by a panel including experts from Canon with prizes
awarded in two age categories, 17 and under, and 18 to 25.

Bob Pickles, Director of Public Sector Business Development and Public Affairs at
Canon said:

> “Following the brilliant entries received for last year’s Humanitarian Awards,
> we’re excited to see the heroic work that young people have carried out over the
> last year. We are also pleased to add a new video category to the photography
> competition and look forward to seeing how this year’s theme is captured through
> the power of photography and video. Good luck to all this year’s entrants!”

Nominations for the [2016 awards](http://www.redcross.org.uk/hca) are open until**
7 August 2016.**

Winners of the Humanitarian Award and the photography and video competition will
be announced at an awards ceremony at the House of Commons, Palace of Westminster
