**Charities and food banks are being invited to join a new national food re-distribution
service.**

Neighbourly Food has been created by social platform [Neighbourly.com](https://www.neighbourly.com/)
and aims to solve both ends of the surplus food distribution challenge.

To match food donations to causes, the service lets local charities, food banks
and surplus recycling operations sign up for free to publicise their food requirements
through the site. Businesses including retailers, supermarkets, grocers, manufacturers
and food distributors also offer their surplus food resources on the site, showing
what they have available, its location for collection and its expiry date.

Marks & Spencer has already signed up to the service to support its national food
redistribution scheme following a six-store pilot. It will use Neighbourly Food
to connect all its stores with local food charities and help it meet its target
of reducing food waste by 20 per cent by 2020.

Luke McKeever, chief executive officer of Neighbourly said:

> “With over 288,000 tonnes of food wasted in the UK every week, UK business needs
> to play its part and do a better job of getting surplus food to the people who
> need it.  Our aim is to recruit more causes around the UK as well as more donating
> businesses. The more people participate, the more effective we can be.”
