The quake registered 7.8 on the Richter scale. The DEC says that 5.3 million people
live in the areas directly affected. Remote villages have still not been reached
as they are cut off by landslides and communications systems have been destroyed.

[DEC](http://www.dec.org.uk/) chief executive Saleh Saeed said:

> “The pictures and stories coming out of Nepal show families ripped apart by this
> disaster. Survivors are in need of medical help, shelter, food and water. In many
> cases they have lost everything and our members are ready to help them rebuild.”

> 3000+ killed in [#NepalQuake](https://twitter.com/hashtag/NepalQuake?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw).
