The latest comprehensive analysis of Atlantic Philanthropies grant giving shows
that in 2011 the foundation made grants worth nearly $20 million in Northern Ireland
and over $36 million in the Republic of Ireland.

In both jurisdictions, the categories of Children and Youth, Reconciliation and
Human Rights, Ageing and Cross Programme made up the bulk of grants. Grants in the
Republic included an additional category, ‘Founding Chairman,’ which awarded nearly
$6 million.

In Northern Ireland, Reconciliation and Human Rights was the largest area of grant
giving at just over $7 million, with Children and Youth receiving $5.7 million,
Ageing $3.4 million and Cross Programme $2.4 million.

In the Republic, Children and Youth was the largest category at nearly $10 million.
Reconciliation and Human rights got nearly $7 million, Ageing $6.5 million and Cross
Programme $6.4 million.

Most of the funding under Founding Chairman went to science work at the University
of Limerick with which Atlantic’s founder, Chuck Feeney, has had a long association.

Apart from Ireland, other countries to receive some of Atlantic’s nearly $200 million
grant giving in 2011 included South Africa, Viet Nam, Australia and Bermuda where
the foundation is registered.

Atlantic, which has made over $6 billion in grants since it was established, intends
to end grant giving in 2016.
