This year’s Guardian and Observer Christmas Appeal will benefit eight charities
that strive for disability rights. They help people with a disability or long-term
illness to participate, express themselves and fulfill their potential, in education,
arts, the workplace, sport and wider society.

Guardian Editor Alan Rusbridger said: “Our Christmas appeal is a chance to raise
much needed funds for our charities – last year Guardian and Observer readers generously
raised over £400,000 for eight charities supporting vulnerable young people – and
to raise the profile of the work they do.”

For the sixth year running charity sector think-tank New Philanthropy Capital has
helped the Guardian and Observer choose the charities for the appeal. It applied
its experience of measuring charity impact and its research in disability areas
to selecting the final eight charities, two of which operate internationally. They
are:

 * Oily Cart
 * Sense International
 * Disability Law Service
 * Greenbank
 * Ambitious about Autism
 * The ACE Centre
 * QEF
 * Basic Needs
