# Tate has largest arts membership scheme in Europe

**Tate Members, Tate’s membership scheme, now has over 100,000 members, making it
the largest of all Europe’s galleries and arts venues. The scheme has grown fourfold
since May 2000 when, at the point when Tate Modern opened, there were 25,000 members.**

Eighty-six per cent of members renew each year on average.

Tate Members was founded in 1958 to support the Gallery. Since then Members have
contributed to the acquisition of over 400 works for the national Collection.

This year Tate Members will contribute over £6 million to Tate from subscription
income of which £1.5 million will be used to purchase works of art.

Nicholas Serota, Tate’s Director, said: “100,000 is a milestone in extending Tate’s
reach into the wider community. Tate’s relationship with Members lies at the heart
of our activities. Their support and their enthusiasm for the visual arts encourages
us to strengthen the Collection and develop the programme in exciting directions’.”

## Membership benefits

Members pay an annual subscription fee of £60-£120. In return they can visit all
Tate exhibitions as many times as they wish. They receive monthly ebulletins, a 
bi-monthly guide and TATE ETC. magazine.

They also have access to a Members Room at Tate Modern, and will also have access
to a new Members Room at Tate Britain in a year’s time.
