Since it launched in 2007, Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) has inspired
40,000 young people across the UK to secure and distribute a total of £1 million
to charity.

The schools programme aims to create “the next generation of passionate and committed
philanthropists” by providing ‘real life’ experiences of charitable giving.

It does so be enabling school pupils to working in teams to identify the social
needs of their local community, and to select a local charity that best addresses
their chosen issue. They then interview staff and beneficiaries before preparing
a presentation for a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style judging panel. The best team winning a
£3,000 donation for their charity.

Youth and Philanthropy Initiative’s Director, Alex Reynolds, said: “This is a fantastic
achievement and a great boost for small, local charities up and down the country.
Our aim is to inspire teenagers to engage positively with their local community
and I’m pleased we’ve been able to make such a huge difference in just five years.”

In May 2012, [the programme was awarded £303,800 from the Social Action Fund](https://www.fundraising.co.uk/social-action-fund-awards-grant-inspire-philanthropy-young-people)(
SAF) to help raise awareness of philanthropy among young people. As a result, the
London-based project will be expanding further in the Midlands and North West.
