Microdonations service Pennies has now generated £500,000 for UK charities. The
number of microdonations it has handled has doubled in the past six months to two
million.

Pennies was launched 17 months ago in November 2010, and gives consumers the option
to donate a few pence to charity when they shop with a credit or debit card. They
can give between 1p and 99p by pressing ‘YES’ on the Chip & PIN machine in-store,
or clicking the ‘Donate’ button if shopping online.

All the money raised goes to charity with the retailer nominating the charities
they want to support with the majority of donations they collect. The remaining
money raised is shared amongst 28 other charities, large and small.

Domino’s Pizza was the first retailer to adopt the Pennies scheme in November 2010
and their nominated charity Special Olympics GB (Northern Ireland customers donate
to Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice) has received over £185,000.

Pennies is available in nine other national retailers including Zizzi restaurants,
Travelodge, The Entertainer, Party Pieces, GO Outdoors and Screwfix, and a number
of smaller merchants.
