The Yorkshire Building Society, the UK’s second largest building society, has chosen
the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) as its charity of the year for 2012.

The fundraising has already got underway, with building society staff getting involved
on the RNLI’s SOS Day, the charity’s biggest fundraising event of the year. At the
society’s headquarters in Bradford, senior managers including new chief executive
Chris Pilling spent the day trapped in a lifeboat, having buckets of water thrown
at them by staff, and were only let ‘ashore’ after they had phoned a string of contacts
in the financial services to raise money for the charity.

In addition, staff at 178 branches of the Yorkshire Building Society around the
UK were wearing Spots Or Stripes for the day. Many received visits from RNLI volunteer
crew to help with the fundraising.

The Yorkshire Building Society fundraising campaign is called ‘Come Rain Or Shine’,
to reflect the fact that RNLI volunteers head out to sea to rescue people whatever
the weather.

The Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation will also make a contribution
to the total raised.

The [RNLI](http://www.rnli.org.uk) was chosen as the charity of the year through
a vote of the society’s members. Last year, Yorkshire Building Society staff raised
[£175,000 for the 2011 Charity of the Year, Alzheimer’s Society](https://www.fundraising.co.uk/yorkshire-building-society-gives-175000-its-first-charity-year).
