**Steve Bridger spoke at the Third Sector Forum on 6 May and has kindly shared his
Powerpoint presentation. **

Steve always has something interesting, useful and insightful to share at the events
that I’ve seen him speak at, so it’s a delight to be able to see his materials from
events that I’ve not been present at.

Steve trailed this event on Twitter by suggesting that he wanted to shake the audience
up a little with a few home truths. I think those come through from his presentation,
as does his argument that he offers these challenges to charity’s digital teams
from a positive, encouraging point of view. He is not out simply to criticise them.
Instead, he has a sense of what they could go on to achieve.

Great preso, Steve.

You make so many good points, and with such clarity (your slides are always so good
looking too).

I especially liked the ‘What’s the return on ignoring?’ point.

Charities can gain so much from engaging with supporters and stakeholders (existing
and potential) via social channels, and many aren’t even really beginning to tap
into the value they offer. The potential for a positive ROI is huge – and that’s
not referring just to fundraising, but a much bigger picture.

But there’s also potential for that ROI to be negative for those charities that
don’t ‘reset’ in time. They will fail to engage with audiences choosing to use these
channels, fall behind, and not have the experience and knowledge to diversify the
range of media they can use successfully to reach out to people that need them or
might support them.

Now is the time to grapple with the organisational issues, pilot, test and learn,
so the shift from the old ways to the new can be made gradually and sustainably.
